Tip: Educate professionals

Some people in positions of authority may not fully appreciate the specific issues you face as an adoptive parent.

Most educational institutions, clubs and organisations should have a child protection policy in place and being acted on. That said, it’s worth having conversations with head teachers, ministers, youth workers and so on to be reassured that they understand your concerns and needs, and will do what they can to implement them.

Sometimes it’s as simple as seeking parental permission before photos and videos are taken and shared (this is becoming standard practice in many places anyway.)

You’ll want to strike a balance between protecting your children and not making them feel different by excluding them from certain group activities.
